Sixth-grade science class creates environmental resilience plan project
Posted on 02/16/2023
6th-grade science classStudents in Mr. Luce's 6th-grade science class recently completed a unit studying the Earth's various systems - the geosphere, biosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. The driving question of the unit was - "How do changes in the Earth's systems impact our communities and what can we do about it?" The students did case studies on towns that were impacted by floods or droughts, calculated carbon emissions and studied the impact that carbon has on the environment. Lastly, the students analyzed countless graphs and charts.

Their final project was to design a resilience plan for  Johnson City.  The group identified three major problems that JC may face in the years to come - (1) more unusual seasonal pattern changes (2) extreme precipitation (3) extreme temperatures. The group came up with possible solutions and actions to counter these problems that included ways to reduce carbon emissions and look toward the increased use of solar power.

On February 15, the students invited district administrators and several JC science teachers and shared their presentations. Impressive work, class!
